Renovation Dream

September 2nd, 2010

Last week as I was plugging away on my computer I could hear that all too familiar sound of rain. I thought it was strange because the clouds were not so ominous the last time I looked out my office window. I was so involved in what I was working on that I simply ignored it, went right back to work but something was very strange. I exerted myself to move my head a few mere inches to look out the window only to see that is wasn’t raining outside…it was raining inside. WHAT?

Condo life has its pros and cons. One of the cons is having to deal with condominium corporations in matters of property damage. I had gone down this path with them once before and let’s just say it was not a pleasant experience. When the water was running down my kitchen and bathroom walls from the unit above me, I knew exactly how I was going to approach the condo corporation this time around. I was going to kill them with kindness and remain calm so that the damage could be repaired immediately. Did that method work? Absolutely!

Within days I had a team of renovation workers in my home tearing out ceilings, walls and insulation to insure that all the water-drenched materials were removed from the affected areas. The workers who came into my home treated my property and possessions like they were their own. The foreman knocked on my office door to say they had completed as much as they could do for now. Had it not been for the missing walls and ceilings, you would never have known a demolition team had been working for over six hours in my home.  Everything was dusted, vacuumed and items were put back in their exact original spots. When things go wrong in life, as they will often do, our attitude plays a major role on how quickly and easily we can fix what needs to be fixed and move on with life.

My only concern now is how do I keep Mocha away from chewing the exposed wires or getting stuck between the walls? That…is an entirely different problem. I’ll keep you posted if my cat goes missing.

Loving Memory

August 31st, 2010

Every time I walk into my closet I see a duffel bag that contains a special project that I started many years ago and never got around to finishing it. Oh sure, I probably used the excuses like ‘I’m just so busy or I simply don’t have the time’. Well, that all ends today because this labour of love deserves to be completed.

The content of the bag that I lovingly packed away was a memory quilt. Each patch was carefully cut from some of Mel’s very unique shirts.  There was a reason I chose those particular shirts. They represented happy and beautiful times. They were the shirts that Mel purchased from every tropical location we vacationed at, including our fabulous honeymoon in Jamaica.

My goal is to finish what I started by December 31. This finishing work will require an incredible amount of patience and accurate sewing skills. This could be tough considering that I am lacking in both of those areas, but I am definitely up for the challenge.

Hook, Line and Sinker

August 30th, 2010

When people are too serious, they are too close to life’s events. When people laugh freely and often, they have accepted the imperfections of themselves and the world they live in. A more carefree life begins with the ability to laugh at your own imperfect self. Take for example,  the laugh I had at my own expense this past Thursday night.

I had received an email from a friend that contained a message stating that the whole world would see two moons at exactly 12:30 am on August 27th. I was rushing around trying to get a lot of business issues put to rest before I left for a few days of vacation. I meant to check the validity of this email before I left but never got around to it. So, what do you think I was doing in the pitch blackness of our campsite waiting for the magical time to arrive? As the clock was ticking, I sat patiently around our campfire (with a headlight strapped to my forehead nonetheless) to get the shot of a lifetime so that I could share photos of this event with you. However; as the time was approaching, I could see nothing magnificent was happening in the sky. In the back of my mind I was thinking, ‘Kim, if this was REALLY going to happen, don’t you think that the media would have had a frenzy with this once-in-a-lifetime event?’  Even though I knew I had fallen hook, line and sinker to this hoax, I could not pull myself away from enjoying the gift of the moonlight.

I just sat there and giggled at myself for being so naive; yet, something special did happened that night. I did not have to use the headlight to navigate myself through the night’s darkness. The one and only moon that was in the sky on Thursday night cast enough light to guide and show me what I needed to see and learn. One full moon is spectacular enough if you take the time to really look and appreciate its magnificent beauty.

Nature’s Wishbones

August 19th, 2010

When I was child my older sister told me that whenever I saw a cottony dandelion to pluck it from the ground, make a wish and blow. If all the feathery particles softly fell from its head that sat so beautifully on its stem, then my wish would come true. At that time our house was surrounded by acres of unmanned bush. So it only made sense that when my winter birthday candles were lit, blowing all of them out year after year was not difficult to do. I had a lot of practice from the thousands of summer dandelions that I hopefully wished upon.

This dandelion caught my attention and reminded me of my innocent childhood. Had all my wishes come true? Who knows or even cares. It was just the excitement of picking a weed to allow my young mind to dream, imagine and hope.

Windmills Of Our Minds

August 18th, 2010

This summer I returned to camping life in a big way. I made the decision to see areas of Manitoba that I have never seen before. On a recent trip I was told that if we took a small detour I could see the wind farms in St. Leon. I said in a very flippant manner ‘sure, why not.’

OMG! I knew these farms existed but to witness them up close and to see the massive blades rotating is truly a sight to be seen. Wind is the fastest growing energy source in the world. No wonder why Manitoba was chosen to be home to one of the largest wind farms in all of Canada. It’s impressive just to look at one of these monstrous structures, but when you see 62 of them disbursed over 23,000 acres of farmland it is mind blowing.  Just to give you an idea of how high these structures are, imagine this. If you would take one wind turbine (blades includes) it would stand as tall as the 34-storey Richardson Building.

I am not even sure I had the words to thank my driver for suggesting the detour to see this amazing display of innovative engineering. I think I was too busy being in awe, snapping pictures and simply speechless. If I forgot to say thank you, I thank you now Jerry.

Am I Seeing Things?

August 17th, 2010

Since I purchased my digital camera I simply cannot stop taking pictures. People, flowers, trees, kids, Mocha, insects; you name it, I’m shooting it.  I am wondering if it is turning into an obsession. Here is why I ask you.  Last weekend I actually took a picture of a shower room door! Okay, so the weather was miserable and I had to amuse myself, but seriously a door!

I feel very differently holding a camera these days. Do you think its old age setting in? Do you think there has always been a photographer trapped inside of me just waiting to get out? Am I only now taking the time to notice things that have always been there, but I was too busy missing out on the wonders that constantly surround us? To answer my questions about whether or not I am obsessed or seeing things I remembered that ‘Lisa C.’ gave me the answer when she posted a comment on last week’s blog regarding my dragonfly picture. Lisa said, there’s so much that we miss in our day-to-day routines; photography gives us the opportunity to slow down, observe, and appreciate those things we might normally have missed.’ I think you are right Lisa and I am grateful that I finally picked up a camera so that I could see things much clearer?

What do you see?

That saying of ‘don’t put all your eggs into one basket’ can also be applied to your book. If you are serious about wanting to share your story with others, then ‘don’t put all your books into one bookstore’. Seriously, all you need is a table, potential customers and you are ready to go. You don’t even need to be indoors to sell your book. If you are brave enough to battle the humidity, mosquitoes, those nasty biting black flies (ouch) and the possibility of a thunderstorm to strike at any moment then you are good to go.

That’s exactly what I did over the last two evenings. I was fortunate to be one of the sponsors for our ladies golf league. Both evenings had great attendance and awesome weather.  The owners of the course really go the extra mile to service their members. Every week a different sponsor comes to the course to introduce goods and services that may be of interest to their members. This allows small business owners (and authors like me and possibly you one day) the opportunity to display and sell their products to interested buyers. Trust me it’s a win/win for everyone. Thank you to all my ‘new’ lady friends who purchased a copy of Tasting Rain.  I appreciate your support. A special thank you to both Jackie and Jamie (owners of Fantasy Lake) for providing a unique venue and relaxed environment so that I could share my story with others.

Welcome to Golf Heaven

August 12th, 2010

Joining a women’s golf league was something that I have wanted to do for quite some time. I finally did it and another thing can be crossed off my bucket list. I am having a wonderful time. I look so forward to my Thursday nights just spending time outdoors with some great ‘new lady’ friends and hopefully improving my game at the same time. This little par-three course is the perfect place for me and my golfing abilities. This family run course is a managed with a lot of heart and consideration for all its members.

Our fees cover 15 weeks of golf, a tasty meal before we head out onto the course, a golf tip by the golf pro every week, and a one hour coaching session from the pro on anything we want to improve on. They cater to everyone. For men, it’s a great way to improve their short game. For ladies, we can increase our confidence level by practicing on a smaller, yet challenging course. Children are welcomed with open arms. The special discount pricing they offer throughout the season really makes it an affordable place where families can spend quality time together. It’s a relaxed environment where you never feel rushed or ashamed for your golfing inabilities. The course itself is maintained with a lot of tender, love and care. Perhaps there is a very good reason why the name of the course is called ‘Fantasy Lake Golf Course.’

Little Imperfections

August 11th, 2010

When we decide to love someone we agree to love ALL of them. A good friend of mine sent me the attached video months ago. Any kind of quote, story, picture or video sent to me that touched my heart I will always hold on to it and wait for the perfect time to share the message with others. I observed a situation today and decided that the day had unfortunately arrived.

I was standing in line in a retail store when a couple in front of me started an argument. The words this woman chose to get her point across to her partner sickened me. They are not worth repeating, but I have to tell you my heart went out to the both of them. For the man, I was embarrassed. For the woman, I was sorry for her. I felt the need to pull her aside, give her a shake and say, ‘There could come a day when you will find yourself alone and wishing he were standing by your side, imperfections and all.’ Words are very powerful. Be sure to choose the right ones because once they are spoken there is no way to take them back.
